Religious purpose and scope of instruction
Slavic Greek Latin Academy’s educational purpose is the study and transmission of Orthodox Christian doctrine and religious practice. Its proposed instruction is confined to that religious purpose: Holy Scripture, Holy Tradition, the Church Fathers, Orthodox theology, worship, catechesis, spiritual formation, and service within the Church.
The study of Slavic, Greek, and Latin Christian texts and Church history supports this religious purpose. These subjects are not presented as separate secular degree programs. All eight proposed programs and their intended awards concern Orthodox Christian religious beliefs and practices; no physical-science degree is proposed.
California statutory framework
California Education Code § 94874(e) establishes the religious-institution exemption. Together with § 94886, it means that an institution meeting the exemption’s conditions does not require BPPE approval to operate under the Act. Eligibility depends on actual organization and operation, not simply a religious name or a corporate filing.
- Religious corporate operation — § 94874(e)(1). The institution must be owned, controlled, operated, and maintained by a religious organization lawfully operating under California’s Nonprofit Religious Corporation Law, Corporations Code, Title 1, Division 2, Part 4, beginning with § 9110.
- Instruction and awards — § 94874(e)(1)(A)–(B), (2)–(3). For the religious instruction described here, teaching must be limited to that organization’s religious principles; degrees and diplomas evidence completion of that religious education and concern its beliefs and practices. Physical-science degrees are excluded.
- Diploma wording — § 94874(e)(4)–(5). The degree title on the face of the award must expressly identify its religious or theological subject and accurately reflect the education completed.
Under § 94874.7, an exempt institution may request written verification. Any verification is valid for up to two years while the institution maintains full compliance with the exemption’s conditions. Verification is distinct from BPPE approval to operate and from accreditation. The Academy is preparing its documentation; written BPPE verification has not been obtained. This website does not claim that BPPE has approved the Academy or determined its eligibility.
The exemption remains subject to applicable statutory limitations, including § 94874.2 concerning certain veterans’ financial-aid participation and §§ 94874.5 and 94927.5 concerning student records before closure.
Proposed programs and full award titles
The following descriptions identify the religious educational scope and full proposed award title for each program. They address the program-and-award information described in 5 CCR § 71395(b)(8). All programs remain in development; these descriptions do not announce open enrollment or awards already conferred.
Under the proposed award framework, any degree or diploma would evidence only completion of the corresponding religious education. Its face would carry the full religious or theological title below; an abbreviation such as Th.M. or Th.D. would not replace that full title. The Academy must adopt the final curriculum, completion requirements, and award documents before enrolling students and conferring awards.
